HISTORY:

This work comes from a set of fifteen paintings constituting his exhibition “Scenes & Sceneries” which was held at the beginning of 2021 in Phnom Penh, just before an episode of confinement due to Covid 19.

The curator explains: “The artist alternates between desolate landscapes, sometimes featuring drifting humans, and interior scenes populated by suffering characters, often huddled together. Through these fifteen paintings, Chankrim draws up an inventory of the degradation of the planet, from a climatic point of view, but also in its socio-economic and cultural impact”.

Chankrim here represents a group of homeless people, in total destitution, with the only "possession" of two dogs who accompany the group.

The bodies are nervous, knotted, distressing, as if tortured, exhausted, not quite dead. They have nothing left. They seem to be separated from the rest of the world, having to rely only on themselves. For how much longer?
